What accessiBe is
accessiBe's flagship product, accessWidget, is an AI-powered overlay: a script that analyzes a page in the visitor's browser and applies automated adjustments, such as generated image descriptions and modified navigation, plus a user-facing accessibility menu. The company positions it as an automated path toward accessibility requirements, and it also sells auditing and remediation services around the widget.
What the record shows about overlays
The overlay approach, from any vendor, has drawn sustained and documented criticism from the accessibility community. Assistive technology users have described overlays conflicting with screen readers, hundreds of accessibility practitioners have signed an open statement urging against relying on them, and sites running overlays have continued to receive accessibility lawsuits. In 2025 the US FTC took action against accessiBe over its advertising claims, resulting in a settlement that included a monetary payment and restrictions on future claims.
